“Anxiety Almost Took Over” — Nigerian Mechanic Temitope Solomon Reveals Emotional Journey From Workshop to Drifting Track

For Temitope Matthew Solomon, cars have always been more than machines. Growing up around his father’s mechanical workshop, he developed a passion that would eventually take him beyond repairing engines to chasing an extraordinary dream in Nigeria’s emerging drifting scene.

Today, the young mechanic-turned-drifter is determined to make his mark in motorsport, despite the pressure, uncertainty and challenges that come with pursuing a sport still struggling for widespread recognition in Nigeria.

Speaking to Sports247, Solomon revealed how his father’s profession shaped his relationship with cars and inspired his journey into drifting.

“First, my dad is a mechanic and I’m also a mechanic, so it has to do with our relationship with cars,” he explained.

However, moving from practising in open spaces to competing on a professional track became a defining moment that tested his confidence.

“When I got the invitation to come and compete, I was like, ‘Wow, can I do this?’ Then on getting to the track, the pressure was much, anxiety almost took over, but then we were able to at least put in our best,” Solomon recalled.

Behind the excitement of screeching tyres and sliding cars was a young man battling nerves while trying to prove himself in an unfamiliar competitive environment.

Rather than allowing the experience to discourage him, Solomon embraced the challenge, recognising that success in drifting requires teamwork, preparation and continuous improvement.

His passion now extends beyond personal achievement, as he currently mentors three aspiring drifters, with others showing interest in learning the sport.

Despite acknowledging that drifting is still finding its place in Nigeria’s sporting landscape, Solomon remains optimistic about its future.

He encouraged young Nigerians with similar ambitions to “just give it a shot” instead of allowing fear to suppress their passion.

With dreams of securing international sponsorships and competing abroad, Solomon hopes to take his skills beyond Nigeria.

For now, his journey remains a powerful reminder that sometimes, the road to sporting greatness begins not inside a stadium, but in a mechanic’s workshop.
