Nigeria’s Flamingos goalscorer Oluebube Umejiaku has expressed overwhelming joy after scoring the opening goal in Nigeria’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Mexico at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, revealing that she had waited patiently for an opportunity to make her mark on the international stage, Sports247.ng reports.
The talented youngster delivered a crucial performance in Thursday’s Round of 16 encounter in Morocco, breaking the deadlock in the 40th minute to put Nigeria on course for a quarter-final showdown against Venezuela.
Speaking after the hard-fought victory, Umejiaku described the goal as a special moment, admitting that her determination and patience had finally been rewarded.
“I feel very happy because I’ve been wanting this for a long time now. I put everything into getting this, and I’m so happy to get it,” she revealed.
The Nigerian forward acknowledged that Mexico presented a formidable challenge, describing the opposition as physically strong and technically impressive throughout the encounter.
“It was a tough game. We tried everything. They are a strong side; they are very good; they are physical,” Umejiaku explained.
Despite pressure from the Mexicans, the youngster revealed that the Flamingos remained united, drawing strength from their faith and the coaching staff’s tactical instructions.
“When we wanted to enter the pitch, we just said, ‘God, just help us.’ We just put God first,” she stated.
Umejiaku also credited the technical crew for preparing the players to overcome Mexico’s resistance, stressing that following their instructions played a significant role in securing victory.
Her opening goal gave Nigeria a vital advantage before Dunstan doubled the lead in the second half, with Mexico grabbing a late consolation goal.
The victory extended Nigeria’s winning streak to three matches following earlier triumphs over Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea.
With Venezuela awaiting in the quarter-finals, Umejiaku will be hoping to build on her memorable performance as the Flamingos continue their pursuit of a historic maiden world title.
