#AFCON23: Sylvanus Okpala Urges Super Eagles To Elevate Performance Against Angola in AFCON Clash

Former Nigerian international, Sylvanus Okpala, has emphasized the need for the Super Eagles of Nigeria to raise their level of play as they face the Palancas Negras of Angola in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarterfinals.

Okpala, who was an assistant coach when Nigeria won the AFCON in 2013, provided insights into the Angolan team, highlighting their speed and finishing ability.

Okpala acknowledged Angola as a formidable opponent, emphasizing that the Super Eagles must take them seriously.

He pointed out the need for the Nigerian team to elevate their performance compared to their previous match against Cameroon.

While expressing confidence in the Super Eagles’ ability to advance, Okpala cautioned against underestimating Angola.

” I hope that our players will raise their game above what they played against Cameroon, they can’t play the same way they played against Cameroon.

They have to raise their standard, even if just to join 10 points or 20 points on top of 20% or 10% of what they played against Cameroon. Because it’s going to be very much easier for Nigeria to win anyway.”

In analyzing the Angolan team’s style of play, Okpala mentioned their tendency to employ bold marking and conservative football, with most players behind the ball.

However, he noted that the Angolans often allow opponents to play freely in their half, creating potential opportunities for Nigeria.

Okpala urged the Super Eagles to capitalize on these openings and be cautious of Angola’s fast attackers who can convert chances into goals.

“They have fast men off-front. And they know how to convert even half chances to become a goal. They have men off-front who can convert chances. They are a good team, but the game is there for Nigeria to win.”

Okpala stressed the importance of strategic preparation, tactical inputs, and a well-thought-out game plan for Nigeria to secure victory in the upcoming match.

He concluded by stating that the game is there for Nigeria to win, but the approach and execution will be crucial factors in determining the outcome.

The Super Eagles are set to face Angola in the AFCON quarterfinals, and fans are eager to see how the team responds to Okpala’s insights and guidance.
