SANWO-OLU / AJEGUNLE FOOTBALL CUP OF NATIONS 2018

The Ajegunle Football Mock Cup of Nations started as in 1982, and has remained the biggest grassroot football competition in the country today.

 

 

The tournament is renowned for being the veritable platform for making champions and reputed as Number 1 talents laboratory in Nigerian Football.

 

Among several established National Team Players of different age grades produced from the competition are Henry Nwosu, Tarila Okoronwata, Ajibade Babalade, Gordon Osusu, Samson Siasia, Emmanuel Amuneke, Ifeanyi Udeze, Dimeji Lawal, Abiodun Baruwa, Gabriel Okolosi, Jide Oguntunase, Taiwo Oloyede, Ikpe Ekong, Brown Ideye, Odion Ighalo to mention a few.

 

The tournament is growing in leaps and bounds, from 4 teams in 1982 to 32 teams in 1996, and 48 teams in 2017.

 

Since then, it has become an annual festival of football talent discovery where overseas based professionals (during their break) mixed up with the raw talents of home based footballers in a convivial atmosphere at the secured Naval Football Playing Ground, Ajegunle-Apapa, Lagos.

The tournament also is an avenue for both local and international football Coaches and Scouts to discover players for their teams. Some of the latest discoveries are playing in the Nigeria domestic Professional League – Hakeem Wakama of Kwara United, Godwin Aguda Wambe of Rangers International, Sikiru Alimi and Ayo Saka both trade their skills with Lobi Stars amongst many others.

Participating teams comes from across the 57 LGAs & LCDAs even some from outside Lagos State, the Center of Excellence for the go-to yearly football event that last for almost two months and organized by the ever resilient and creative youth of Ajegunle Youths Cosmopolitan Football Association.

In 2015, Malawi was crowned the Champions; Ethiopia won in 2016 while Tunisia is the current defending Champions!

The 36 years old Grassroots Football Tournament has received headline partnership of the APC Gubernatorial Candidate – Mr. Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu who is deeply passionate about real sports development and productive youth engagements.

Now, who wears the crown of the 2018 Sanwo-Olu / Ajegunle Mock Cup of Nations?

The decision day is Sunday – December 23, 2018 at the Football Field, Navy Barracks off Mobil Road, Ajegunle – Apapa, Lagos.
