Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) has set in motion an initiative that has been described as a move towards ‘integrating talented wrestlers of Nigerian descent into the national team setup’ and ensuring that better results are achieved for the country internationally.
Sports247 reports that this assertion was gained from an official confirmation of the NWF’s plan to establish a training camp at Iowa State University in the United States of America as part of their preparation for this year’s World Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan.
This comes after NWF president, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, approved the initiative that will help in grooming Nigerian wrestlers and inviting new discoveries to the fold, ahead of the global championship, which is scheduled to hold from October 24th to November 1st.
A media statement from the NWF added, “The camp is aimed at bringing together Nigerian wrestlers based in different parts of the US, while) providing opportunity for them to train collectively ahead of the Championship.
“Some of Nigeria’s top wrestlers currently studying in the US will have the opportunity to undergo effective training at the camp, while several home-based wrestlers with valid US visas will also join the training programme.
“The camp will also be open to new talents willing to join the national wrestling team, providing a platform for identifying and integrating talented wrestlers of Nigerian descent into the national team setup.
“Nigerian-born athletes residing in the US who are eligible and willing to represent Nigeria will also have the opportunity to participate in the training programme.”
