The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has officially pledged its support for the newly inaugurated Nigeria Netball Federation, signaling a major step in the revival of a sport with deep historical roots in Nigeria.
In a statement released by NOC Public Relations Officer Tony Nezianya, NOC President Habu Ahmed Gumel commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission, particularly Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, for their role in restoring netball to Nigeria’s sports development agenda.
According to Gumel, the appointment of Esther Aluko as President of the Nigeria Netball Federation provides the sport with experienced leadership capable of driving meaningful growth.
“Dr. Aluko’s background as a former athlete and sports administrator positions her well to lead the federation into a new era,” Gumel noted.
The renewed push for netball comes amid growing interest in the sport among Nigerians both locally and in the diaspora. Stakeholders believe the momentum could help establish a strong foundation for long-term development.
The Federation also revealed that several corporate organisations are already showing interest in supporting the sport through funding and infrastructure development. Plans are underway to introduce netball equipment—including poles and balls—into schools and local communities nationwide.
To complement these efforts, the NOC has pledged full technical assistance, particularly in rebuilding coaching and officiating structures to ensure sustainable growth.
The long-term ambition for the sport has also been clearly outlined. The National Sports Commission has challenged the Federation to target a podium finish at the Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, India, in 2030.
Officials believe that setting such a target early will motivate young athletes to embrace the discipline and commitment required to compete internationally.
With institutional backing, corporate interest, and renewed grassroots plans already taking shape, Nigerian netball appears set for a major transformation as the country works toward establishing itself as a future force in the sport.
