Former Super Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie has identified defensive lapses, particularly the mistakes involving goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, as the turning point in Nigeria’s shocking 3-2 defeat to Malawi at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The result, one of the biggest upsets in the tournament’s history, left the defending champions under pressure ahead of a crucial Group C clash against Zambia.
Reacting to the defeat, Oparanozie admitted she was stunned by the Super Falcons’ performance, noting that Malawi displayed greater hunger and belief throughout the contest.
“I was shocked by Nigeria’s performance. Malawi showed more fight and courage, and unfortunately the mistakes we made, especially at crucial moments, changed the course of the game,” Oparanozie said.
The former captain pointed to the errors involving Nnadozie as key moments that allowed the Scorchers to seize control of the match but urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the team’s ability to recover.
“Football is a game of mistakes, and unfortunately those errors proved costly. But I still believe this team has what it takes to bounce back against Zambia and get the campaign back on track,” she added.
Oparanozie also praised Malawi for capitalising on their opportunities, insisting the debutants deserved credit for producing a disciplined and fearless performance against Africa’s most successful women’s national team.
Despite the disappointing start, the former striker believes the Super Falcons possess the experience and quality needed to respond positively, drawing confidence from the resilience the team has shown in previous major tournaments.
Nigeria now heads into Saturday’s showdown with Zambia knowing that victory is vital to keeping alive its hopes of reaching the knockout stage and qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Oparanozie expects the Super Falcons to learn from their mistakes, improve defensively and produce the response expected of a team chasing a record-extending 11th WAFCON title.
