Nigeria’s Sarah Matthew Targets Gold Medal At World Armwrestling Championship 2024

After winning two gold medals in the female arm wrestling event of the recent 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana, Sarah Matthew has now set her mind on performing a similar feat at this year’s World Armwrestling Championship 2024.

She disclosed as much while recounting her experience at Ghana 2024 and reeling out a long list of names in appreciation of people that supported her to realise her ambitions at the continental level.

After conquering Africa, the muscular athlete from Kogi State is now thinking of emerging tops at the forthcoming World Arm Wrestling Championship, as well as the Commonwealth Games and this year’s World Armwrestling Championship 2024.

Matthew mentioned the past and current governors of Kogi State, as well as the royal father of Ebiraland among many people who supported her achievements, and thanked them for the state reception they gave her on her return home.

She added: “Also, I want to appreciate the former deputy governor of Kogi State, Dr Philips Salawu, for his support and encouragement. I am really grateful, sir.

“I also want to appreciate our distinguished senator, Barrister Natasha Akpoti, for all her support. I have a lot of people that I need to say thank you to, from the bottom of my heart.

“The board members of the Arm Wrestling Federation, the president, the coaches, and my fellow athletes that have supported me so far.

“You all made this happen for me, and I do not underestimate your efforts. I will ensure that I continue to put the good name of Ebira people on the limelight.”

Matthew concluded with a promise to keep putting in her very best efforts and stay focused in order to bring more gold medals home to Kogi State and Nigeria.
“My next target is to go to the world level and also come back home with gold medals.
“Of course, I’ve made plans to put in more effort in my training to ensure that I’m strong enough to come out the best in any other international or national competition that I am to attend.

“The World Championship is ahead, Commonwealth Games is ahead. There is still Olympics ahead of time, and I’m really preparing hard for all of these competitions.

“I know that I am going to make it … with your support financially, emotionally, and morally.

“I know that I am going to come out the best, because I have what it takes to come out as the best.

“Thank you all once again. I hope the next time I come before you, I will again come back with a gold medal.”
