Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has confirmed that preparations are already underway for Nigeria to host the 2027 Africa School Games in Abuja.
Speaking on the development, Dikko revealed that the commission has already begun strategic planning to ensure the country delivers a successful and memorable competition.
“Nigeria is ready to host Africa,” he said.
According to the NSC chairman, the Africa School Games will serve as a major opportunity to boost youth sports development across the continent.
“This is bigger than just hosting a tournament,” he implied.
Dikko explained that discussions surrounding the event also include broader conversations around sports development and infrastructure improvements nationwide.
“We are discussing sports development across board,” he noted.
The sports administrator stressed that hosting the games successfully would further strengthen Nigeria’s position as a leading sporting nation in Africa.
“We want to host a befitting event,” he added.
For Dikko, youth competitions like the Africa School Games are essential for discovering and nurturing the next generation of elite athletes.
“School sports remain very important,” he stressed.
The proposed tournament in Abuja is expected to attract young athletes from across Africa and create fresh opportunities for talent identification.
“It will help develop future champions,” many sports stakeholders believe.
For Dikko, the message is clear.
Invest in youth sports.
Host world-class events.
And build stronger development pathways.
Because the future of African sports begins with giving young athletes the right platform to grow.
