The national trials, held from May 13 to May 16, 2026, at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Alake Sports Centre in Ijeja, Abeokuta, were organised to select Team Nigeria athletes for the forthcoming African Taekwondo Championships in Bamako, Mali.

According to Peter, the competition met international standards and successfully produced deserving winners.

“The trials in Abeokuta were very successful in selecting the best athletes. The organisation was excellent, while the standard of competition was impressive and in line with World Taekwondo rules and standards.”

“The referees also showed great professionalism in their officiating,” she said.

“Overall, it was a well-coordinated and highly competitive event.”

She further applauded the athletes for their determination, discipline, and level of preparedness throughout the championship.

“The fighters who participated were highly motivated, well-prepared, and determined to win their contests,” Peter added.

“Since the competition was conducted in a round-robin format, it ensured fairness and gave every athlete equal opportunity, allowing the best fighters to emerge victorious.”

The trials featured some of Nigeria’s top taekwondo talents battling for national team spots ahead of the African Championships scheduled to hold from May 28 to June 2 in Bamako, Mali.

The event also witnessed outstanding performances across different weight categories, while officials of the National Sports Commission were present to encourage athletes and technical officials during the competition.
