President of the Nigeria Hockey Federation (NHF), Simon Nkom, has called for urgent investment in modern hockey infrastructure across the country, warning that Nigeria’s recent progress in the sport can only be sustained with quality playing facilities.
Nkom, who has overseen renewed efforts to reposition hockey through grassroots competitions, coaching development and improved administration, believes the sport is gradually reclaiming its place among Nigeria’s leading disciplines after years of decline.
However, he insists that the next phase of growth depends on governments and private investors committing resources to build world-class hockey pitches nationwide.
“If we truly want hockey to continue growing in Nigeria, we must invest in modern infrastructure. Standard hockey pitches should become legacy projects across the country,” Nkom said.
The NHF president noted that recent improvements in youth development programmes and coaching standards have produced encouraging results, with more young players embracing the sport and national competitions becoming increasingly competitive.
He argued that without adequate facilities, however, the federation’s long-term development plans could be slowed significantly.
“We’re seeing positive changes because of strategic planning, better coaching and grassroots development. The next step is to provide the facilities that will allow these talents to flourish,” he added.
Nkom also challenged federal and state governments to include hockey facilities in their sports development programmes, stressing that quality infrastructure would not only improve athlete development but also position Nigeria to host more continental and international tournaments.
The Nigeria Hockey Federation has continued to push for reforms aimed at reviving the sport, with increased emphasis on school competitions, grassroots talent identification and coach education.
With hockey showing signs of a resurgence, Nkom believes sustained investment in modern infrastructure will be the key to transforming Nigeria into one of Africa’s leading hockey nations once again.
