Team Nigeria captain and para powerlifting world record holder Folashade Oluwafemiayo has declared that Nigeria’s athletes have “no excuses” ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, insisting the team’s outstanding preparations have set the stage for a successful campaign in Glasgow.
Oluwafemiayo, one of Nigeria’s most decorated para-athletes and a multiple-time world champion, praised the National Sports Commission (NSC) for providing an environment that has allowed athletes to focus entirely on preparations.
Team Nigeria is currently undergoing its final phase of training after arriving in Aberdeen, Scotland, where athletes are participating in a high-performance camp before the Games begin in Glasgow later this month.
“We have no excuses because everything we need has been provided. The preparations have been excellent, and now it’s up to us to make Nigeria proud,” Oluwafemiayo said.
The reigning Paralympic champion described the current training camp as one of the finest she has experienced during her illustrious career, highlighting the quality of the facilities, equipment and overall welfare provided to the athletes.
She believes the investment made by the National Sports Commission has boosted the confidence and morale of Team Nigeria ahead of one of the biggest multi-sport events on the international calendar.
“This is one of the best camps I’ve ever been part of. The facilities and equipment have been fantastic, and we’re determined to repay that support with medals,” she added.
Nigeria heads into the Commonwealth Games with high expectations after finishing as Africa’s highest-ranked nation at the previous edition in Birmingham, winning 35 medals, including 12 gold.
As captain of Team Nigeria, Oluwafemiayo expressed confidence that the country’s athletes are fully prepared to build on that success and deliver another memorable performance for millions of Nigerians.
The para powerlifting star urged her teammates to remain focused throughout the competition, insisting that the level of preparation leaves no room for excuses as Team Nigeria targets another successful outing on the Commonwealth stage.
