Neutrality Stitched into Greatness – Monday Kanu Hails LSFA Chairman Hajj Gafar’s Diplomat’s Jersey in Ikenne

At the packed stadium where tension crackled through every seat and every chant carried the weight of ambition, one image quietly stole the spotlight before the final whistle ever arrived.

Standing calmly by the touchline, amid the roaring atmosphere of the NNL Super 4 grand finale, Lagos State Football Association Chairman, Hajji Gafar Liameed, wore more than just a football shirt.

He wore a statement.
Half of the jersey carried the colours and identity of Sporting Lagos, the other half represented Inter Lagos FC. Two rivals. Two ambitious Lagos clubs.
One symbolic message.

As thousands watched the historic all-Lagos showdown unfold, Liameed’s unusual choice of attire became the embodiment of neutrality, balance and statesmanship in football administration.

Former Flying Eagles player and football management strategist, Monday Kanu, described the moment as a masterstroke of leadership.

“This was bigger than football fashion,” Kanu said. “It was a powerful symbol of unity, fairness and the collective dream of Lagos football.”Hajji Gafar Liameed chose a wise diplomacy over division.”

The image itself told a compelling story.
With the crowd swelling in the background and emotions running high, Liameed stood composed in the hybrid jersey , one side carrying Sporting Lagos’ navy blue identity, the other reflecting Inter Lagos’ colours and patterns.

“It was a visual declaration that, regardless of who lifted the trophy, Lagos football had already won,” Kanu said.

For Kanu, the gesture perfectly captured the philosophy that has driven the recent rise of football in the state.

According to the former Nigeria youth international, Liameed’s administration has consistently prioritised growth over politics, creating an environment where clubs can compete fiercely on the pitch while remaining united by a larger vision for Lagos football.

“The promotion of Sporting Lagos and Inter Lagos to the Nigeria Premier Football League is not accidental,” Kanu noted.

“It is the product of structure, support and leadership that understands the importance of inclusion.”

The former Flying Eagles star, who represented Nigeria at the 1987 FIFA World Youth Championship in Chile, further praised the LSFA boss for fostering healthy competition without creating unnecessary rivalries.

In many ways, the jersey became the defining image of the Super 4 final — not because of its design alone, but because of the message stitched into it.

At a time when football leadership is often judged by allegiances and personal interests, Gafar Liameed chose to stand between two competing clubs without leaning toward either side.

And in doing so, he may have delivered one of the strongest symbols yet of Lagos football’s new era — an era where rivalry fuels progress, but unity remains the ultimate victory.
