A quiet revolution unfolded on the greens of the Elephant Cement Golf Club in Sagamu, Ogun State, this week when 14-year-old schoolboy Malik Adams stunned over 170 golfers to emerge champion of the inaugural Golf Shop NG Tournament.
The teenager, a student of Technical College, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, was never considered among the favourites heading into the competition.
Competing against experienced club players and seasoned amateur golfers, Malik instead produced the performance of his young career to claim a memorable victory.
Playing off a 25 handicap, the youngster returned an astonishing Net 61 score — 10-under-par — alongside a Gross 86, finishing six strokes ahead of his closest challenger in a tournament that attracted more than 180 registered participants.
What made the triumph even more remarkable was the maturity and composure he displayed throughout the round.
Malik delivered a near-flawless outing, recording 16 pars and birdies on holes four and eight to dominate a field packed with older and more experienced competitors.
His victory immediately became the talking point of the tournament, with many golf enthusiasts hailing it as a major boost for grassroots golf development in Nigeria.
The maiden Golf Shop NG Tournament drew notable personalities from across Ogun State and the golfing community.
Among dignitaries present at the ceremonial tee-off were Ogun State Commissioner for Housing, Jagunmolu Akande Omoniyi; the Ebi of Idena, Oba Lukman Adebambo Salami; Asiwaju Adeen of Ogun State, Alhaji Adebayo Samsudeen Apelogun; retired Chief Justice of Kwara State, Justice Lambo Akanbi; Captain of Abeokuta Golf Club, Umar Bakare; and Captain of Elephant Cement Golf Club, Engr. Adedeji Esan.
Speaking after the event, Esan praised the organisers for creating a platform capable of discovering and nurturing young talents like Malik.
“We are delighted to witness this Golf Shop NG inaugural event. Mr. Kuti has brought a much-needed spotlight and glory to our club,” he said.
Tournament organiser Mr. Kuti also described the competition as part of a wider vision to develop golf at the grassroots level while giving younger players opportunities to compete against elite golfers.
According to him, Malik’s emergence as champion reflects the growing potential of youth golf in the country and validates the tournament’s mission of creating opportunities for budding talents.
For Malik Adams, however, the victory represented more than just a trophy. It was proof that age is no barrier to excellence — and perhaps the arrival of Nigeria’s next golf sensation.
