Team Nigeria has laid down a major marker at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, powering into the Mixed 4x400m Relay final after producing the fastest performance of the qualifying round.
The Nigerian quartet dominated Heat One, crossing the finish line in 3:14.58 to finish ahead of Australia (3:15.21) and Jamaica (3:17.36), with all three teams earning automatic qualification for the final.
More importantly, Nigeria’s winning time stood as the quickest across both heats, a performance that immediately established the green-and-white as genuine contenders for the Commonwealth title.
Zambia progressed as the fastest loser from the opening heat after clocking 3:21.72, while Sri Lanka narrowly missed out in 3:22.42. Lesotho did not start, and Sierra Leone was disqualified.
In the second heat, England won in 3:15.11, followed by Kenya (3:15.92) and Scotland (3:19.07), who all secured automatic qualification. India completed the eight-team final after advancing as the remaining fastest loser in 3:20.98.
Nigeria’s display is another sign that the country’s quarter-mile programme is peaking at exactly the right time.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria deliberately assembled one of its strongest relay squads for Glasgow, built around individual 400m specialists such as Samuel Ogazi, Edidiong Okon Udo, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Esther Joseph, Patience Okon George and other relay options with international experience.
The qualification also caps another encouraging day for Team Nigeria’s athletics squad.
Already in Glasgow, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has delivered Nigeria’s eighth gold medal by winning the men’s shot put, while Tobi Amusan added a bronze medal in the women’s 100m hurdles after her bid for a historic third consecutive Commonwealth title ended with a third-place finish.
Nigeria will also be represented in several individual finals, with Samuel Ogazi and Edidiong Okon Udo advancing in the men’s 400m, Ella Onojuvwevwo reaching the women’s 400m final, and Udodi Onwuzurike qualifying for the men’s 200m final.
With confidence growing across the athletics team, the Mixed 4x400m relay now presents another golden opportunity.
Having topped the qualifying standings, Team Nigeria will enter the final knowing every other nation will be chasing them.
