Former DR Congo international Yannick Bolasie has paid tribute to the Leopards following their elimination from the FIFA World Cup, describing the team’s performance against England as a proud moment for Congolese football despite the defeat.
The former Crystal Palace, Everton and Aston Villa winger said the players deserved praise for their courage and commitment after pushing one of the tournament favourites in the Round of 32.
DR Congo’s return to the FIFA World Cup marked the country’s first appearance at the global showpiece in decades, with the Central African nation exceeding expectations during the tournament.
«”The players can be proud of themselves. They gave everything against one of the best teams in the tournament, and the whole country should appreciate what they’ve achieved,” Bolasie said.»
The 36-year-old noted that although the defeat ended DR Congo’s World Cup journey, the team’s performances throughout the tournament demonstrated how much football in the country has progressed.
Bolasie added that the campaign had united Congolese fans around the world and given supporters renewed belief in the future of the national team.
«”After such a long absence from the World Cup, the players represented the nation with pride. This is something we can build on for the future,” he added.»
The former Premier League star believes the experience gained at the tournament will benefit the current generation of players and inspire the next wave of football talent in DR Congo.
He urged the country’s football authorities to build on the momentum by investing in youth development and strengthening the national team programme, insisting the Leopards have shown they can compete with the world’s best.
