Eric Chelle Contract: Ex-NFF Official Says Federation Has Finally Learned From World Cup Failure

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Committee member Barrister Austel Elumelu has applauded the federation’s decision to hand Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle a contract extension, describing it as a clear sign that Nigerian football authorities have learned from the costly mistakes that contributed to the country’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

The NFF recently moved to secure Chelle’s future despite his relatively short time in charge, a decision that has sparked widespread debate among football stakeholders. While some have questioned the timing, Elumelu believes the move reflects a new level of planning and stability within the federation.

Nigeria’s failure to qualify for back-to-back FIFA World Cups has intensified calls for long-term planning rather than the frequent coaching changes that have often disrupted the Super Eagles.

“Credit must be given where it is due. The decision to extend Eric Chelle’s contract deserves applause because it shows the NFF may have learned from the mistakes that cost us World Cup qualification,” Elumelu said.

The respected football administrator noted that continuity is essential in modern football, arguing that successful national teams are built on long-term projects rather than short-term appointments.

According to Elumelu, giving Chelle the assurance of a longer stay allows the Franco-Malian coach to plan effectively for upcoming competitions, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

“Hopefully, this is a sign of progress. Stability gives the coach confidence to build a team, implement his philosophy and prepare properly for the future,” he added.

Elumelu also urged the NFF to match the contract extension with consistent support for the coaching crew, stressing that technical stability, proper planning and administrative backing are all crucial if the Super Eagles are to regain their place among Africa’s leading football nations.

With expectations growing under Chelle’s leadership, the former NFF Technical Committee member believes the federation has taken an important step toward creating the stability needed for long-term success.
