A severe blow has been handed out to the Nigerian duo of Wilson Okon and Abubakar Yakubu, who reently announced that they had gained fresh appointments with African Kickboxing Confederation, as the continental body has sensationally denied giving them such recognition.
Sports247 reports that, in contrast with documents being splashed across social media by Okon and Yakubu, purportedly affrming their new roles with African Kickboxing Confederation, the continental body has issued a formal letter to refute the duo’s recent pronouncements.
While acknowledging that both officials previously held positions with the African body, the letter of denial revealed that Okon and Yakubu are no longer in the organisation’s service because Nigeria remains suspended from kickboxing’s international activities until due elections take place in the country’s affiliate association.
The statement signed by Aslam Mahomed, president of WAKO Africa and African Kickboxing Confederation, located at Benoni 1500, 11 Stymie Avenue in South Africa, and addressed to Mr. Javan Bernard on August 12, 2026 clarified that the two Nigerians are flaunting their former appointments.
However, Mahomed, who wrote ‘to clarify the matter officially on behalf of WAKO Africa,’ went on to expatiate that Wilson and Yakubu are not authentic officials of the organisation, due to the fact that the ‘Kickboxing Federation of Nigeria remains suspended from WAKO activities.’
Mahomed stated at length, “Thank you for your correspondence regarding the purported appointments of Mr. Wilson Okon and Mr. Abubakar Yakubu within WAKO Africa. The appointments referred to in your correspondence relate to previous positions and are no longer valid.
“Mr. Wilson Okon does not currently hold the position of WAKO Africa Technical Committee Chairman, and Mr. Abubakar Yakubu does not currently hold the position of WAKO Africa Disciplinary Committee Chairman.
“Accordingly, neither individual is authorised to represent themselves as holding these positions on behalf of WAKO Africa. Furthermore, WAKO Africa’s position regarding Nigeria remains unchanged.
“The Kickboxing Federation of Nigeria remains suspended from WAKO activities, pending the completion of the required processes and elections in accordance with the directives previously communicated by WAKO.
“For the avoidance of any doubt, this suspension applies to the Nigerian Federation and its representatives, including Mr. Wilson Okon, Mr. Abubakar Yakubu, and any other person purporting to represent Nigeria while the suspension remains in effect.”
Sports247 reports further that the African kickboxing top shot concluded by pointing out that the suspension handed to the Nigerian officials was sanctioned by the global governing body, adding: “WAKO Africa will continue to respect and uphold the position communicated by the WAKO International Federation.
“Until the suspension is formally lifted by the appropriate authority, no individual from Nigeria may rely upon previous WAKO Africa appointments as authority to act or represent WAKO Africa in an official capacity.”
