Nigerian martial arts expert, Wilson Okon Godwin, has been appointed as the new chairman of the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) Africa technical committee, Sports247 reports.
Okon’s new role was confirmed in a letter of appointment signed by WAKO Africa general-secretary, Rasat Onuru ER, who disclosed that the board of directors approved the Nigerian in recognition of his extensive experience, dedication and exemplary performance in officiating.
Onuru added that Okon is expected to play a vital role in ensuring that the highest standards of fairness, professionalism and technical excellence are maintained in WAKO Africa competitions, while expressing confidence in his expertise to uphold the integrity of the African Kickboxing Confederation.
The appointment of Okon to the strategic continental leadership position was also cited as a major achievement for the sport’s continued development across the continent, especially as it coincided with confirmation that kickboxing will be a full medal event at the 2027 African Games in Cairo, Egypt.
WAKO Africa president, Aslam Mahomed, described the development as a significant step in the growth of kickboxing in Africa and a historic milestone for the sport across the continent, after more than two years of sustained efforts, collaboration and commitment by officials and stakeholders.
Mahomed also commended WAKO International Federation president, Roy Baker, first vice-president, Espen Lund, as well as Egyptian Kickboxing Federation president, Mohamed Sobih, and members of the African community for their contributions to the successful bid.
