The president of Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa is still relishing the huge performances of the country’s athletes at the CAA Region II U-18/U-20 Athletics Championships in Dakar, Senegal, where he declared that the country’s young athletes ‘made a big statement.’
Sports247 reports that Okowa and other officials of the AFN were beaming with delight and satisfaction, after the country’s contingent emerged overall champions, and the president praised the athletes for their outstanding form during their various events.
Okowa, who is also the president of Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Region 2, commended the Nigerian athletes for putting up top-notch performances, which saw them top the final table with a total of 23 medals – 15 gold, seven silver and one bronze.
While also showering accolades on the athletes for exhibiting a high level of discipline and commitment throughout the competition, Okowa pointed out that their results affirrmed Nigeria’s prime positition in the region, proved the country’s depth of emerging talent and confirmed a bright future for the nation’s athletics.
“We have made a big statement in Dakar, that Nigeria is blessed with talents. The future of athletics in Nigeria is bright. We have put in place a system to nurture young athletes and monitor their transition to the elite level.
“Once again, I congratulate them for being Nigeria’s worthy ambassadors in Dakar,” said Okowa, who also assured that the AFN remains committed to developing young athletes and providing support for progress into elite levels.
