While pouring encomiums on all Nigerian athletes who featured in various events of the Classics last weekend, Okowa singled out Ajayi for winning the men’s 100m on his debut at the Wanda Athletics Diamond League in Eugene, US on Saturday, and Amusan, who placed second in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Okowa, who is also the senior-vice-president of Confederation of African Athletics and president of CAA Region II, also praised the country’s junior athletes for their efforts at the U18/20 championships in Dakar, Senegal, where they won gold in the medley relay for girls and extended their haul to nine wins.

He showered accolades on all the junior athletes as well as the elite ones, who he acknowledged are hitting the right physical form ahead of their respective events at Glasgow 2026, heading into which he promised more far-reaching support from everyone at the AFN.

“I say hearty congratulations to all of them for flying the flag of Nigeria high. They have shown us that they are in good shape. The AFN, under the current board, is making that difference count. We will continue to support our athletes and care for their welfare.

“We will just keep the momentum going, as the national camp opens for the contingent in Aberdeen, Scotland. With the support of the National Sports Commission and preparations thus far, I am confident that our athletes will do well at the championships in Glasgow,” Okowa reiterated.
