AFCON24: Abiodun Obafemi, Says Nigeria’s Loss To Guinea Is Wake-Up Call For Super Eagles

In the aftermath of the Super Eagles’ 2-0 loss to Guinea in a pre-AFCON friendly, former Nigerian international Abiodun Obafemi has suggested that the defeat could serve as a positive omen for the team.

Obafemi draws parallels with a previous loss to Togo before the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, emphasizing that such setbacks can be a wake-up call for the squad.

Expressing his perspective on the recent loss, Obafemi remarked, “I think it’s a very good omen. Honestly, I remember the last friendly game we played before Atlanta 96 in Lagos.

We lost to Togo. So, honestly, I’m not saying they are the priority or that they did not put enough priority on the friendly game going into a tournament of such a nature. But, honestly, they know now that they need to raise the level of their game.”

Obafemi believes that the defeat has shifted the team’s perspective, emphasizing the need for them to elevate their performance.

He suggests that the initial approach might not have placed sufficient emphasis on the friendly, but the loss has now highlighted the importance of focused preparation.

With the AFCON tournament on the horizon, Obafemi remains optimistic about the Super Eagles’ prospects, stating, “If we had won, the cup is just there for them to be taken.

For me, honestly, the level of their preparation before the Guinea match is quite different, if you ask me, from how they feel now.

Because they know now that if they don’t raise their game, we might not even qualify out of that group. I still have great belief in the team that the team will do well.”

As the Super Eagles regroup and refocus, fans and analysts alike will be eager to see how the team responds to this wake-up call and readies itself for the AFCON challenge.
