‘We’re Not Taking Anyone Lightly’ — Christy Ucheibe Reveals Super Falcons’ WAFCON Mission

Super Falcons midfielder Christy Ucheibe has declared that Nigeria’s sole objective at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) is to successfully defend the continental title, insisting the African champions will approach every match with the same hunger that brought them success at the last tournament.

The SL Benfica midfielder said there is no room for complacency despite Nigeria entering the competition as defending champions and Africa’s most successful women’s national team.

The Super Falcons lifted a record-extending 10th WAFCON title at the 2025 tournament, defeating hosts Morocco in a dramatic final to reclaim the continental crown after missing out in 2022.

“Our target is clear—to defend the title. We know what it takes to become champions, and we’ll approach this tournament with the same determination and winning mentality,” Ucheibe said.

The 24-year-old stressed that the Super Falcons will not underestimate any opponent, noting that the standard of women’s football across Africa has improved significantly in recent years.

Ucheibe, who has become one of the key figures in Nigeria’s midfield, believes respect for every opponent will be essential if the team is to retain its crown.

“Every team will want to beat Nigeria because we’re the defending champions. That’s why we have to stay focused, remain humble and give our best in every game,” she added.

Nigeria heads into the tournament as one of the favourites after enjoying another successful cycle under head coach Justine Madugu, with the competition also serving as a crucial step in the Super Falcons’ preparations for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Super Falcons are expected to continue their final preparations ahead of the tournament, with the squad aiming to extend Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football by retaining the continental title.
