Former Nigeria international Loveday Omoruyi has revealed his excitement ahead of the Super Eagles squad announcement for the Unity Cup, saying he is eager to see which domestic league players will be selected by head coach Eric Chelle.
Speaking on the expected squad list, Omoruyi stressed that including players from the Nigeria Premier Football League should become a permanent part of national team policy.
“Home-based players must always be included,” he said.
According to the former international, every coach handling the Super Eagles should have contractual obligations requiring the inclusion of domestic players in squad selections.
“It should be part of the job,” he implied.
Omoruyi explained that he has long advocated for stronger representation of local league players within the national team setup.
“I’ve always supported home-based talents,” he noted.
The former player believes giving NPFL stars regular opportunities would help strengthen both the national team and the domestic league itself.
“It benefits Nigerian football overall,” he added.
For Omoruyi, relying solely on foreign-based players limits the growth and visibility of local football.
“The local league must not be ignored,” he stressed.
He also praised Chelle’s recent scouting visits across NPFL venues, describing them as an encouraging sign for domestic football development.
“At least the players are being watched,” he said.
The Unity Cup is expected to feature several fresh names as Nigeria continues rebuilding under a new coaching direction.
For Omoruyi, the message is clear.
Protect local talents.
Make domestic inclusion consistent.
And give NPFL players genuine opportunities.
Because a strong national team should always maintain a healthy connection with its local league.
