Backed by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and powered by the Grassroot Football Initiative, this year’s edition opened with a strong message from NDDC Managing Director, Chief Samuel Ogbuku, PhD—delivered by the Director for Culture and Women Affairs, Mrs. Ahunna Imoni—who praised the tournament’s rapid growth since its debut.

She lauded the organisers’ efforts in raising the quality of the event and emphasized its core focus: shaping young talents, not just chasing trophies.

Mrs. Imoni further urged participating students to shun drug abuse and uphold discipline, while revealing that female teams will be incorporated into future editions as part of the tournament’s expansion plans.

On the pitch, the opening day produced fireworks. Comprehensive Secondary School’s early lead crumbled as Pabod Model School stormed back for a 4–2 victory. Defending champions Enitona High School also stamped their authority on the tournament with a crushing 9–0 win over Baptist High School, signaling their intent to retain the title.

Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Engr. Promise Alagbere, said the successful start of the second edition reflects a growing culture of continuity and excellence.

He noted that the excitement among the 22 participating teams is one of the tournament’s biggest wins, pointing out the impressive performance of a 14-year-old Pabod Model School substitute who dazzled spectators.

Over the next three weeks, the teams will battle for supremacy, with top performers expected to receive awards such as Best Goalkeeper, Most Valuable Player, and other individual honours. Cash prizes are also up for grabs.

The 2025 W.W. Whyte Secondary School Football Tournament will climax on Tuesday, November 25, with the grand finale set for the Civic Centre in Port Harcourt—where new stars
