Rivers United produced a spirited second-half fightback from two goals down but their CAF Champions League campaign came to a painful end following a dramatic 2-2 draw against FC San Pedro in Uyo on Sunday.
The Nigerian side appeared to be heading for a comprehensive defeat after the visitors stunned their hosts by establishing a two-goal advantage, but Rivers United refused to surrender and battled their way back into the contest.

Despite completing the comeback to make it 2-2, however, it was the Ivorian side who ultimately celebrated qualification to the next round at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
The outcome brought a heartbreaking end to a tie that had been delicately balanced following a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Côte d’Ivoire.
San Pedro had taken the lead in that encounter through Issouf Dosso before substitute Iyowuna Douglas struck in the 69th minute to rescue Rivers United and give the Nigerian side what appeared to be a strong platform ahead of the return fixture.
With the second leg taking place on Nigerian soil, Rivers United entered Sunday’s encounter knowing they had an opportunity to complete the job in front of their supporters.
Instead, they found themselves facing a mountain to climb.
San Pedro showed little sign of being intimidated by the occasion as the Ivorian side took control of the tie with two first-half goals, leaving Rivers United staring at continental elimination.
The home side emerged after the break knowing only a major response could keep their campaign alive.
And the response eventually came.
Rivers United threw players forward, increased the pressure on their opponents and fought their way back into a match that had appeared to be slipping beyond their reach.
Two goals restored parity at 2-2 and transformed the closing stages into a tense battle as the Nigerians desperately searched for the result that would keep their Champions League ambitions alive.
But San Pedro held their nerve under sustained pressure and survived the Rivers United comeback to secure their passage to the next stage.
The elimination will be particularly difficult for Rivers United to accept after their impressive work in the opening leg.
The Nigerian side had travelled to Côte d’Ivoire and avoided defeat, with Douglas’ equaliser earning them a 1-1 draw and leaving everything to play for in Uyo.
Before Sunday’s encounter, Rivers United had also enjoyed an encouraging start to their domestic campaign, opening their Nigeria Premier Football League season with a 2-0 victory over Plateau United.
But continental football proved far less forgiving.
San Pedro arrived in Nigeria knowing they needed a major performance away from home and produced exactly that, particularly during a first half in which their two-goal advantage completely changed the complexion of the contest.
For Rivers United, there will be frustration over allowing the visitors to establish such a commanding position before launching their recovery.
Their second-half response demonstrated character and ensured the tie remained alive until the closing stages, but ultimately the damage had already been done.
It was a night of contrasting emotions in Uyo — relief and celebration for the visitors, disappointment for the Nigerian representatives.
Rivers United fought back. Rivers United refused to surrender. But when the final whistle arrived, it was San Pedro who were celebrating — and Nigeria’s continental hopefuls were left to reflect on a comeback that came agonisingly short.
