Edo State’s sporting prowess took center stage once again as its para cyclists delivered a commanding performance at the African Para Cycling Track Championship in Cairo, Egypt — clinching multiple medals and earning international recognition.
The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, has hailed the team’s outstanding display, describing it as a reflection of “the Edo spirit” and a testament to Governor Monday Okpebholo’s commitment to sports development.

In a statement signed by his Media Officer, Edoko Wilson Edoko, Enabulele praised the athletes for raising the state’s profile on the continental stage. “These young champions are not just medalists; they are ambassadors of excellence and determination,” he said.
Among the standout performers was 17-year-old visually impaired cyclist, Ojieabu Favour Omo, who dominated the Tandem B Class Sprint, Individual Pursuit, and 1 Km Time Trial, winning three gold medals against competitors from 11 African nations.
Edo’s dominance extended beyond the elite category, as Osaretin Godwin Grace and Divine Ogbe also racked up medals in the junior division. In total, Edo cyclists bagged seven gold, five silver, and two bronze medals — a historic haul that earned them scholarships to the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) Training Camp, one of the sport’s highest development platforms.
The Head Coach of the Cycling Association, Angela Okoro, briefed Hon. Enabulele on the results, expressing gratitude for the Commission’s support. “This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the encouragement we’ve received from the state government,” she noted, urging for increased investment in cycling to build on the momentum.
Coach Okoro emphasized that athletes like Divine Ogbe — who clinched one gold, three silver, and one bronze — are primed for greater achievements with the right support.
The success in Cairo comes on the heels of Team Edo’s dominance at the recently concluded EKUS Judo Championship, further solidifying the state’s reputation as a sports powerhouse in Nigeria.
With the latest para-cycling triumph, Edo continues to set the pace in athlete development and performance, sending a strong message ahead of future national and international competitions.
