William Troost-Ekong Eyes Future In Football Leadership As Super Eagles Captain Reveals NFF Ambition

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has revealed that his long-term ambition extends beyond the football pitch, with the defender setting his sights on a future role in the administration of Nigerian football once his playing career comes to an end.

Rather than following the traditional route into coaching, the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Player of the Tournament says he is preparing for a career in football governance, where he believes he can help shape the future of the game in Nigeria.

Ekong disclosed that he has already begun studying the qualifications and governance structures required to work within football administration, describing it as a natural progression for someone determined to leave a lasting legacy beyond his achievements on the field.

“I’m already looking at what is required because, when my playing career is over, I want to contribute to Nigerian football from an administrative perspective,” Ekong said.

The Al Kholood defender explained that years of playing at the highest level in the Netherlands, Belgium, England, Italy, Greece, and Saudi Arabia have given him first-hand insight into how successful football institutions are managed.

According to the 31-year-old, those experiences have inspired him to pursue leadership roles capable of influencing long-term policy, player development and football governance in Nigeria.

“I’ve experienced different football cultures throughout my career. I believe that knowledge can be valuable in helping Nigerian football continue to grow after I retire,” he added.

Ekong’s comments come at a time when increasing numbers of former internationals have expressed interest in becoming more actively involved in football administration, with many advocating for greater player representation within the decision-making structures of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

For now, however, the Super Eagles captain remains fully focused on his playing career and Nigeria’s ambitions under head coach Eric Chelle, as the three-time African champions begin preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Ekong’s latest remarks, however, provide a clear indication that he intends to continue serving Nigerian football long after he leaves the pitch.
