‘Leading Nigeria Was Never Easy’ — Troost-Ekong Reflects On Pressure Of Super Eagles Captaincy

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has opened up on the immense pressure that came with leading Nigeria, admitting that the responsibility of captaining one of Africa’s biggest football nations was sometimes overwhelming.

Reflecting on his time as skipper, Troost-Ekong said one of his greatest achievements was keeping the squad united and ensuring everyone worked towards a common goal.

“My biggest contribution has been making sure everyone moves in the same direction,” Troost-Ekong said.

The experienced defender explained that leadership extends far beyond performances on the pitch, noting that teammates constantly observe how a captain reacts and handles difficult situations.

“The players watch your reactions and how you handle situations,” he said.

Troost-Ekong acknowledged that carrying the expectations of millions of Nigerians can be challenging.

“Sometimes the pressure can be overwhelming,” he admitted.

Despite the demands of the role, the defender described captaining the Super Eagles as one of the greatest honours of his career.

“It has been a privilege to serve as captain,” he added.

The former Watford defender also revealed that the trust placed in him by teammates, coaches and supporters motivated him to always give his best whenever he represented Nigeria.

“The honour comes from the belief people have in you,” he stressed.

Troost-Ekong, who retired from international football in December 2025 after a decade with the national team, remains one of the most respected leaders of his generation and played a key role in several major international campaigns for Nigeria.

“His experience and leadership have been vital for the Super Eagles in recent years,” many football observers believe.

For Troost-Ekong, leadership was never just about wearing the armband but about inspiring unity, setting standards and carrying the hopes of an entire nation with pride.
