Captain of Team Nigeria’s wheelchair basketball team, Gbemisola Ijigbamigbe, has declared that the squad is mentally prepared to compete with the best teams in the Commonwealth as they gear up for their historic debut at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Nigerian captain said the players are embracing the challenge of competing on one of the biggest stages in para-sport and are determined to prove they belong among the world’s elite.

Wheelchair basketball will be one of the disciplines where Team Nigeria hopes to make a strong impression, with the squad entering the Games after months of intensive preparation under the guidance of the National Sports Commission (NSC).
“We are mentally ready for this competition. We know it won’t be easy, but we’re prepared to compete against any team we face,” Ijigbamigbe said.
The experienced captain acknowledged that making a Commonwealth Games debut comes with added expectations but insisted the players are focused on delivering strong performances rather than being intimidated by more established nations.
Ijigbamigbe also praised the commitment shown by her teammates throughout the preparation period, expressing confidence that the squad has what it takes to compete at a high level.
“This is a great opportunity for us to represent Nigeria. We believe in ourselves, and we’re ready to make history for our country,” she added.
Nigeria’s participation in wheelchair basketball marks another important milestone in the country’s growing investment in para-sports, with the discipline continuing to gain recognition on the international stage.
