A fresh appeal has gone out to business organisations and firms in the private sector across Nigeria to involve more in youth football ventures across the country, Sports247 reports.
The appeal came from Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) director-general, Honourable Lekan Fatodu, who highlighted what he referred to as major roles that should be played by people in the private sector towards promoting youth development in the country.

Fatodu gave the declaration while noting the efforts of IHS Nigeria towards the promotion of grassroots football in Lagos State, following the outfit’s partnership with Spires 5-A-Side Naija Street Soccer Championship, which he described as a very laudable effort.
Fatodu added that gaining more of such initiatives would go a long way in boosting the search for future talents, as stronger private-sector involvement is essential towards enhanced devlopemtnnof football in Lagos State through the invilvement of youths in the game.
He added during a meeting with organisers of the Spires 5-A-Side football competition that the initiative has introduced a broader step and approach in the use of football as a gateway to youth empowerment and job creation with opportunities in talent discovery.
The director-general further noted Spires 5-A-Side’s commitment to building socially relevant youths beyond the football pitch through sports-tech and vocational skills development, thereby giving young people access to digital knowledge that leads to sustainable assets.
While recalling his experience at the 2024 edition of the competition, Fatodu assured of his commitment towards supporting the competition’s long-term potential for growth and praised the convener, Dr. Femi Bankole Allibay for upholding the values of public-private sector collaborations.
Fstodu pointed out, “From grassroots football to technology, the goal is simple – discover talent, create opportunities and empower the next generation. A stronger sports ecosystem requires collaboration, and the private sector has a major role to play.
“This is bigger than football. This is about the future. From my experience, I now have a clear picture of level that the tournament can reach in the nearest future. The LSSC is ready to lend support in key areas, as we recognize the impact this initiative has on our youth.”
