WAUG Knocks Out National Badminton Championship

This year’s West Africa Universities Games (WAUG 2018) in Port Harcourt has knocked out the much-talked about National Badminton Championship.

Although the badminton championship is billed for Lagos and WAUG 2018 at University of Port Harcourt in the Garden City, organisers decided to shift the competition in order to allow players concentrate.

Sports247.ng gathered that the postponement became necessary because the earlier date clashed with WAUG 2018 and a number of top badminton players are expected to feature in the Games.

Consequently, the second edition of the high profile Mutual Benefits National Badminton Championship, earlier slated from November 6th to 10th, will now hold from November 13th to 17th.

A statement by Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN) disclosed that the venue remains Mutual Benefits Hall, at Police College, Ikeja, Lagos.

This comes few days after University of Port Harcourt vice-chancellor , Ndowa Lale described WAUG as the Olympics Games of West Africa students and most competitive games among students in the region.

Professor Lale said: “Hosting the best student athletes from West Africa demands meticulous planning and painstaking execution to pull off a memorable competition that should further confirm our standing as the undisputed masters of sports on the West African coast.

“We do not just intend to win. It is important that we put up a gold standard that future hosts would strive to meet.”
