Updated information about the arrest of United States-based university basketball player Daniel Tobilola Adegboyega indicates that he is now facing deportation, following a charge of rape and allegations of overstaying his visa, Sports247 reports.
While the initial report was that Jacksonville Police Department arrested Adegboyega at his apartment following allegations that he forcibly raped a woman twice on July 29, additional information states that Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) has also placed a detainer on him.
This comes after an ICE agent testified that Adegboyega’s F-1 student visa expired in 2023 and he has not been enrolled in school since 2025; though his host family disputed the allegation and blamed his visa complications on some administrative errors by his previous university.
However, investigators said they recovered clothes stained with blood during their search of Adegboyega’s home, and he is now being held without bond at Calhoun County Jail under Aniah’s Law in Alabama, where the player pleaded not guilty, and his defense argues that the sexual encounter was consensual.
Alarmingly, even if he is granted bail on the criminal charge, US legal experts fear Adegboyega will be transferred to an immigration detention facility to face deportation proceedings, as his residential status suddenly became a focal point of the allegations.
A report by WVTM13 adds, “Jacksonville Police Department Investigator Andrew Swain testified about the timeline of events on July 28. The victim stated she went to Adegboyega’s apartment around 11:30 pm to watch a movie.
“About twenty minutes in, she alleged that Adegboyega began making sexual advances despite her telling him to stop. The victim texted her roommate during the incident. After repeated unanswered calls and texts, Adegboyega eventually answered on the victim’s phone, claiming she was in the bathroom.
“Alarmed, the roommate contacted Jacksonville police for a welfare check. Officers arrived at the apartment around 2 am and found the victim visibly upset. Police collected statements and evidence, including the victim’s pants, which reportedly had bloodstains.
“The victim told officers that Adegboyega forcibly raped her twice that evening. Adegboyega denied using force. He was arrested that night and has remained in the Calhoun County Jail. If bond is denied, immigration proceedings would not begin until his release.
“Adegboyega’s host father, Ryan Parlee, disputed that account, calling the information inaccurate. Parlee said Adegboyega attended high school in Iowa for four years, graduating in 2022, and never returned to Nigeria. He claimed a family trip to Mexico in 2022 triggered the documentation issues.
“He said the schools had been handling Adegboyega’s immigration paperwork, but UC Riverside failed to file necessary documents, causing his visa to lapse. The issue reportedly surfaced when Adegboyega transferred to Jacksonville State University this summer.”
Sports247 gathered further that Adegboyega continues to maintain his innocence and his host family is standing firmly with him, though the university quickly moved to suspend him from their basketball team the moment he was taken into custody.
