A 21-year-old Nigerian college basketball player at Jacksonville State University in the USA, Daniel Tobiloba Adegboyega, has been arrested on a charge of first-degree rape, and he has subsequently been suspended by the institution.
Sports247 gathered that Adegboyega was immediately remanded in detention at Calhoun County Jail, pending a bond hearing, as investigations continue regarding the incident.
Information from the USA’s Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) revealed that the alleged rape occurred on Wednesday, and the warrant papers stated that Adegboyega engaged in sexual intercourse with the victim ‘by forcible compulsion,’ which violates the law.
Authorities at the university confirmed that Adegboyega has been suspended from their basketball team following his arrest, which marks a major setback for the youngster, who enrolled at Jacksonville State in May this year.
The 7-foot centre spent the 2025-26 season at California Baptist, after previously playing two seasons with South Florida, then joined Kennesaw State in 2022, following his early days at Grand View Christian High School in Des Moines, Iowa, USA, but he did not appear in any game for the Owls.
Before his arrest, Adegboyega had played 27 games overall in his college career, with five starts, while averaging 0.7 points and 1.3 rebounds per game, as he showed huge promise for better days ahead.
However, Sports247 reports further that the rape charge is still an allegation, and Adegboyega is presumed to be innocent unless he is eventually proven to be guilty by prosecutors in court.
