The wait is finally over. After months of preparation, anticipation, and major investment in the continued growth of professional flag football, Showtime Flag Football League Season XV kicks off on Sunday, September 20, 2026, with five opening-week battles marking the beginning of another ambitious chapter for the sport in Nigeria.
Game Week 1 brings together ten teams and immediately delivers some fascinating matchups, with Gateway Horns facing Delta Panthers, Abia Warriors taking on Rivers Alphas, defending Showtime Bowl champions Lagos Knights meeting Delta Braves, Ibom Raptors battling Lagos Green Backs, and Lagos Rebels confronting Cross River Ikan Sports.
For Showtime, however, September 20 represents much more than the first games on a new fixture list. It is the beginning of a season designed to demonstrate just how far the league has come and how much further it intends to take professional flag football.
Season XV will stretch from September 2026 until Showtime Bowl XV on May 2, 2027, creating months of competition, entertainment and storytelling. The campaign features 18 regular-season game weeks, the 5v5 Coed Cup, Wildcard Week, playoffs, individual awards and ultimately the battle to become Showtime Bowl champion.
And there has arguably never been more to play for.
Showtime has put a ₦60 million reward commitment behind Season XV, with the eventual Showtime Bowl champions set to collect ₦15 million, while the runners-up will receive ₦6 million. The Regular Season Champion will earn ₦5 million, and the 5v5 Cup Champion will take home ₦4 million, while male and female MVPs and other outstanding performers will also receive financial rewards and recognition throughout the campaign.
Waiting at the end of the championship road is something else Showtime hopes will become an unmistakable symbol of sporting excellence: a spectacular new Showtime Bowl trophy, currently being designed with a projected value of at least $20,000, alongside championship rings for the victorious team.
That combination of prize money, trophies, rings, player incentives and professional recognition is part of a bigger philosophy — giving athletes something substantial to compete for while creating a league that fans, media organisations and commercial partners can follow throughout an entire sporting season.
There will also be immediate intrigue on the field.
Lagos Knights enter the new campaign as defending Showtime Bowl champions after their historic Season XIV triumph, meaning every opponent now has an opportunity to test themselves against the team carrying the crown. Abia Warriors, meanwhile, return after seeing their championship reign ended last season and begin their new challenge against Rivers Alphas.
Elsewhere, Gateway Horns and Delta Panthers will have the opportunity to make an immediate opening-week statement, while Ibom Raptors and Lagos Green Backs meet in another potentially explosive encounter. Lagos Rebels and Cross River Ikan Sports complete a five-game programme that gives supporters plenty to discuss from the very first weekend.
The diversity of the competing teams also illustrates the wider ambition behind Showtime. Names representing Lagos, Abia, Delta, Rivers, Ibom and Cross River will take the field during Game Week 1, strengthening the league’s effort to build flag football identities and rivalries that extend beyond one part of Nigeria.
Season XV arrives at an important moment for the sport. Flag football is heading towards its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028, creating an unprecedented opportunity for athletes, leagues, sponsors and supporters around the world.
Showtime wants Nigeria and Africa to be part of that momentum.
From its professional league structure and dedicated Showtime Arena to its expanding digital presence, player development, commercial investment and increasingly ambitious championship experience, Showtime has been building an ecosystem intended to make flag football more visible, valuable and attractive.
That makes Sunday’s opening games important not only for the ten teams chasing their first victories.
They represent another opportunity for brands, sponsors, marketing agencies and media organisations to see the sporting property Showtime is developing: a competition with athletes to promote, teams to support, stories to tell, audiences to engage and a championship journey lasting more than seven months.
But before thoughts turn to May, there is Game Week 1.
Five games. Ten teams. A new season. A championship to chase.
After all the announcements, preparations and anticipation, the talking is almost over.
On Sunday, September 20, Showtime Season XV begins — and from the opening flag pull to the eventual lifting of the Showtime Bowl trophy, the race to become the next champions of Showtime starts now.
