Team Nigeria Set for 2026 World Fencing Championships in Hong Kong

Nigeria’s fencing hopefuls are preparing to step onto one of the sport’s grandest stages as they head to Hong Kong for the 2026 World Fencing Championships, scheduled from July 22 to 30.

Staged at the AsiaWorld-Expo, the tournament will bring together more than 1,000 elite athletes from over 100 countries, making it the most prestigious event in the sport outside the Olympic Games.

For Team Nigeria, the competition is both a test of skill and a statement of intent.

Leading the squad is 18-year-old Inkosi Brou, who climbed to 65th in the world rankings after his quarterfinal finish at the 2026 African Championships in Abidjan.

His rise made him the highest ranked Nigerian fencer while his compatriot Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye is rated 120th, but the two will join forces in Hong Kong alongside 16-year-old Olen Phoenix Zaoku.

Ranked 507th globally, Zaoku is the youngest competitor in the men’s sabre field of 154 athletes, a remarkable achievement for the teenager.

On the women’s side, 17-year-old Adebodunrin Thomas will carry Nigeria’s flag in the épée event. As the country’s sole female representative, she faces a daunting field of 174 competitors.

Yet her back-to-back appearances at the African Championships have already marked her as one of Nigeria’s brightest teenage talents, and Hong Kong offers her a chance to test herself against the very best.

National coach Ibrahim Alogba sees the championships as a vital step in the team’s growth: “We are excited that our fencers will have another opportunity to test their might against some of the finest athletes in the world.”

” Beyond competition, this is about gaining valuable ranking points and building confidence ahead of the Commonwealth Championships next month.”

“Every member of this team is capable of surprising the world.”

For Nigeria, the journey to Hong Kong is not just about chasing medals—it is about building momentum.”

Each bout represents another step toward establishing a program capable of challenging fencing’s traditional powerhouses. With youthful energy and determination driving the squad, the future of Nigerian fencing looks increasingly promising.
