Tanzania Nears Completion of Uhuru Stadium Renovation as Government Pushes Sports Infrastructure

Dar es Salaam – The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports and Chief Government Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, has inspected ongoing renovations at the historic Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam, confirming that the project has reached 90 percent completion.

Msigwa, who was accompanied by the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Methusela Ntonda, made the visit on October 13, 2025, as part of the government’s broader mission to enhance sports infrastructure across the country under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.

“The government continues to closely monitor this renovation to ensure that international standards are maintained,” Msigwa said during the inspection. “Our goal is to see Uhuru Stadium restored to its former glory as one of the nation’s premier sporting arenas.”

The extensive upgrades at the facility include the installation of modern floodlights, high-quality artificial turf, a refurbished running track, new seating, renovated toilets, modern gates, and new perimeter tiles, all aimed at elevating the stadium to international standards.

The renovation of Uhuru Stadium forms part of the government’s long-term plan to modernize major sports venues across Tanzania. This initiative aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision to make sports a vital pillar of employment creation and economic development.

With completion now in sight, the rejuvenated Uhuru Stadium is set to reclaim its place as a central hub for national and international sporting events — symbolizing Tanzania’s growing commitment to sports excellence and infrastructure modernization.
