The President of Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria (TFN), Mrs Tayo Popoola has disclosed that the maiden national championship that is scheduled to start on September 17th in Lagos is an important part of preparations towards the Olympic Games.
Sports247 reports that Popoola also disclosed that the competition, which is sponsored by Nigeria’s Senate Leader and is offficially known as 1st Michael Opeyemi Bamidele National Taekwondo Championship, will also serve as a preparation point ahead of the African Games.

Popoola added that the sponsor, Honourable Opeyemi Bamidele, a former Commissioner for Sports as well as for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, has promised to add many incentives that will excite not only the competitors but also fans of taekwondo at the venue.
She disclosed further that Bamidele sees sports as a way of unifying people, hence the encouragement he has given different events in the past, then stressed that the competition is another example of how presonalities should support government in the task of sports development.
While pointing out that the competition, which is also tagged ‘Championship Of Unity,’ is open to states, clubs and schools all over the country, Popooola added: “We are so happy that it is coming at a time we are working towards the next African Games and Olympics.
“This is the maiden edition of the competition and we have high expectations that the athletes will enjoy themselves in Lagos. It is an opportunity to continue to look at the progress of our athletes and know those we expect to represent us in future continental and global events.
“Participation can only be in team format, and I am happy that, so far, we are having good responses from various parts of the country. The federation will continue to work so hard to make the event hitch-free.”
