Basketball stakeholders across Nigeria have raised the alarm over what they describe as a coordinated attempt to destabilise the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), accusing a long-serving board member of orchestrating sustained attacks against the current leadership for personal gain.

According to the stakeholders, the recent wave of criticism, misinformation and public outbursts directed at the NBBF is not accidental but part of a deliberate strategy to create instability and truncate the constitutionally guaranteed tenure of the present board.
They allege that the ultimate objective is to reposition certain interests ahead of Nigeria’s participation at the Women’s Basketball World Cup scheduled for August.
Informed observers argue that the unfolding situation follows a familiar pattern. The same veteran board member, they note, has spent decades in recurring disputes with successive federation leaderships, often becoming confrontational whenever influence or control was reduced. Stakeholders insist the current crisis fits squarely into that historical trend.
Tensions reportedly intensified following an internal board restructuring that saw the individual removed from a key technical leadership role.
Stakeholders maintain that the decision was guided by professionalism, transparency and ongoing institutional reforms within the federation.
However, they say the fallout has since escalated from internal disagreement into open hostility, media campaigns and efforts to cast doubt on the board’s constitutional mandate.
Of growing concern is the alleged expansion of the conflict beyond the federation. Stakeholders claim journalists and media practitioners who refuse to align with the dissenting narrative have been subjected to intimidation, harassment and public disparagement.
They warn that targeting journalists for maintaining professional independence is dangerous and undermines democratic values within sports administration.
The stakeholders emphasised that media organisations must not be weaponised for personal vendettas, stressing that press freedom and journalistic neutrality are critical to the credibility and growth of Nigerian basketball.
Reaffirming their position, the stakeholders insist that the tenure of the current NBBF board is lawful, constitutional and non-negotiable.
Any attempt to misrepresent tenure timelines or force an early exit through public pressure, they argue, constitutes an abuse of process and a direct threat to institutional stability.
They further cautioned against allowing personal ambition to overshadow national interest, particularly at a time when Nigerian basketball is enjoying increased global visibility and preparing for major international competitions.
The priority, they said, must remain athlete welfare, technical development and sustainable progress.
Calling for restraint, stakeholders urged all parties to respect constitutional order and place the future of Nigerian basketball above personal grievances.
“No individual is bigger than the institution,” one insider stated. “The truth remains sacrosanct, and history has a way of exposing every agenda.”
