The Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has named Chief Dr Ogwu Onoja as Patron and Ambassador of the All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) 2026, reinforcing its commitment to the successful hosting of the continental women’s golf tournament.
The association also honoured Onoja with a plaque in recognition of his consistent support and contributions to the growth of women’s golf in Nigeria and Africa.
Onoja is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and the Agenyi-Attah of the Igala Kingdom.
Speaking during the presentation of the appointment letter in Abuja, LGAN President Lami Ahmed said the choice of Onoja was informed by his leadership qualities, influence and passion for sports development.
She announced that the 2026 AACT would be staged from November 1 to November 7 at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja, and would attract participants from over 30 African countries.
Ahmed noted that Nigeria had previously hosted the championship in 1996 and 2010, adding that the upcoming edition would further highlight the country’s organisational competence and growing stature in African sports.
“As Patron and AACT Ambassador, Chief Onoja will provide strategic guidance, promote the values of the tournament and help mobilise national support in line with Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope sports agenda,” she said.
In his acceptance speech, Onoja described sports as a vital instrument for unity and social cohesion, capable of bringing people together beyond ethnic and political boundaries.
He stressed the importance of increased support for women’s participation in sports, noting that female athletes competing at continental level project excellence, resilience and national pride.
Onoja commended LGAN for its commitment to the development of women’s golf and pledged his full support toward the successful hosting of the 2026 championship.
“Hosting Africa will present Nigeria with another opportunity to showcase its organisational strength and hospitality,” he said.
He also disclosed that he had been a member of the IBB International Golf and Country Club for over 12 years, describing golf as a sport that builds character, patience and strategic thinking.
