Nigerian golfer Godwin Okoko has made history by becoming the first West African player to win an event on the Sunshine Development Tour’s East Africa Swing, strengthening his position in the race for a breakthrough on the professional golf circuit.
The 24-year-old secured his maiden professional title at the Rift Valley Championship, which ended at Nakuru Golf Club in Kenya on Tuesday, October 27, after finishing one stroke ahead of home favourite Simon Njogu.
Okoko carded a five under par 68 in the final round to finish on 10 under par 209, claiming victory in the eighth leg of the tour’s East Africa Swing.
His triumph carries significance beyond the title itself, as Nigerian golfers continue to compete on a circuit that offers opportunities to earn ranking points and progress towards the main Sunshine Tour.
According to reports from Kenya’s Daily Nation, Okoko now occupies second place on the East Africa Swing Order of Merit with 654 points, behind Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera, who leads with 791 points.
The standings provide another measure of Okoko’s progress this season, although he still faces competition as the tour continues.
His victory was secured through a strong final-round performance that included six birdies and an eagle on the 16th hole. Despite dropping shots on the fifth, eighth and 12th holes, he maintained his advantage to finish ahead of Njogu, who returned a total of 210.
Okoko’s achievement has also drawn recognition from the Nigeria Golf Federation, whose president, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, described the victory as a significant milestone for Nigerian golf.
The federation has promised to reward the golfer upon his return to Nigeria, while acknowledging the contribution of his trainer, Pro Dominic, to his development.
Beyond the recognition, Okoko’s next challenge will be to build on the victory and maintain his position in the standings as he pursues further opportunities on the professional circuit.
He is expected to return to competition at the Alpha Bravo Golf Classic, scheduled for November 18–21 at Lakowe Lakes Golf Estate in Lagos.
For Nigerian golf, Okoko’s breakthrough offers a notable result on foreign soil. Whether he can turn the achievement into sustained progress on the tour will be the next test of his growing professional career.
