Olopade Breaks Silence On Chelle’s Super Eagles Contract Delay

National Sports Commission (NSC) Director-General Bukola Olopade has dismissed growing speculation surrounding the future of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle.

Olopade insisted that the Franco-Malian tactician remains fully committed to Nigeria despite delays in signing his improved contract.

Concerns had emerged after reports revealed that Chelle was yet to formally sign the renewed contract jointly offered by the NSC and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), while links with the Algeria national team and several North African clubs intensified.

However, Olopade described the delay as a normal administrative process rather than a sign of uncertainty.

“Before contracts are signed on paper, you must have done a great deal of work to solidify all ends,” Olopade said.

“It’s a renewed contract, which means it’s an existing one. We have agreed, so I am sure that the Nigeria Football Federation will conclude the documentation as soon as possible.”

The NSC boss also dismissed reports suggesting Chelle could leave Nigeria for another coaching opportunity.

“Eric is a gentleman, so all the stories about other countries looking for him do not hold water. I’ve sat with him and I know he is not bothered by all those rumours,” he added.

Chelle’s Impact

Since taking charge of the Super Eagles just over a year ago, Chelle has overseen 25 matches, including 15 competitive fixtures.

During that period, Nigeria has recorded 10 victories in regulation time, one penalty shootout win over Egypt in the third-place match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, two penalty shootout defeats, and two draws during the unsuccessful 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

His tactical approach and positive results have reportedly attracted interest from other national teams and clubs across North Africa.

Improved Deal on the Table

Negotiations between Chelle, the NSC and the NFF have reportedly been concluded, with only the formal signing of documents outstanding.

His current contract is due to expire later this year.

The proposed agreement is expected to include improved financial terms, enhanced technical support and a broader role within Nigerian football.

Reports indicate that while Chelle requested a monthly salary of $130,000, the NSC is prepared to offer $100,000 per month, with the salaries of his coaching assistants to be paid separately.

The 48-year-old is also expected to oversee Nigeria’s U-23 men’s national team as preparations begin for qualification to the football event at the 2028 Olympic Games.

Chelle Wants to Stay

The Super Eagles coach has also reaffirmed his commitment to the national team.

“I try to do my job and I want to say thank you for all the support. If I have some time, I will give everything for this national team. Every day I try to improve as a man and as a coach too,” Chelle said during Nigeria’s international friendlies in June.
