The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has commenced a special 24-hour clean-up operation in preparation for the 22nd National Sports Festival, “Gateway Games 2024,” set to hold in the state.

This continuous operation, which will run throughout the festival period, is targeted at maintaining a clean and healthy environment across the state, especially as it welcomes thousands of athletes, officials, visitors, and tourists.
According to Hon. Abayomi Hunye, Special Adviser to the Governor and Special Adviser on OGWAMA, all personnel and equipment of the agency have been fully mobilized to ensure the success of the clean-up campaign. The initiative includes round-the-clock waste collection and the desilting of road verges to ensure a cleaner and safer environment.
“All Private Sector Participants (PSPs) handling waste in various communities have been activated for extra rounds of collection to prevent any waste backlog. Government compactors have also been deployed to support their efforts,” he stated.
At competition venues and other public areas, arrangements are in place for timely refuse collection. Street sweepers will operate in shifts to keep the venues and roads clean throughout the festival.
Hunye urged road users to watch out for OGWAMA caution signs and drive carefully, as staff will be on active duty around the clock. He also called on residents to continue maintaining cleanliness in their surroundings and to properly containerize their waste for easy collection.
Reaffirming OGWAMA’s commitment to creating a clean, safe, and healthy environment during the Gateway Games, Hon. Hunye welcomed all participants and guests to Ogun State—a state known for setting high standards, including in waste management.
