In what proved to be one of the standout matchups of the heats, the Nigerian quarter-miler went head-to-head with NCAA leader Jonathan Simms.
The contest lived up to expectations early on, with both athletes locked stride for stride through the opening phases.
However, Ogazi shifted gears down the home stretch. Displaying strength, composure, and superior finishing speed, he pulled away decisively in the closing metres to secure victory.
Simms followed in 45.52s, but it was Ogazi who emerged with the fastest qualifying time overall heading into the final.
The performance not only reinforces Ogazi’s growing reputation on the collegiate circuit but also signals serious intent ahead of the medal race.
With momentum, confidence, and top qualifying status on his side, the Nigerian enters the final as the man to beat.
