President of First Mahi Babes and First Mahi FC, Prince Chidiebere Eze Onuoha, has declared that the club is fully prepared for the challenge of the 2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Championship as the team targets promotion to the NWFL Premiership.
First Mahi Babes have been drawn in a highly competitive Group A alongside Delta Babes, Rosaria Victrix, and DreamStars Ladies, with only one team guaranteed progression to the promotion playoffs.
Speaking exclusively with Sports247 ahead of the tournament in Calabar, Onuoha expressed confidence in his team’s readiness and determination to compete at the highest level.
“First Mahi Babes is prepared for the NWFL Championship, and we shall compete to the best of our ability,” he said.
The club president admitted that the battle for the lone qualification ticket makes the group even more intriguing, but insisted that the team has put adequate plans in place.
“One team qualifying from the group is what makes it interesting, and as for our strategies, we are keeping them close to our chest.”
Onuoha also revealed that the club has learned valuable lessons from previous campaigns, particularly the importance of respecting every opponent in the competition.
“We have learned a lot from our previous outings, and one of the biggest lessons is never to underestimate any side.”
As one of the notable names in women’s football development, First Mahi Babes continue to prioritize both competitive success and player development.
“Like every ambitious club, we prioritize qualification to the Premiership, but we are also mindful of growing in strength and exposing our players so they can mature and develop.”
The First Mahi president also delivered a message of belief and unity to the club’s players, supporters, and stakeholders.
“We believe in our ability to improve on our qualities and give young talents the opportunity to grow and contribute to the development of women’s football. We urge our players to remain disciplined and dedicated to hard work while asking our fans and partners not to relent in their support.”
According to Onuoha, promotion to the NWFL Premiership would represent much more than just a sporting achievement for the club.
“When we get promoted, it will not just be for First Mahi Babes. It will significantly reflect the level of improvement and commitment of all the genuine and dedicated stakeholders of women’s football.”
As the countdown to the championship continues, First Mahi Babes will be hoping that their preparation, ambition, and youthful energy can propel them to a long-awaited return to the elite division of Nigerian women’s football.
