NWFL 2023/24 Annual General Assembly – Pioneering Sustainability and Growth In Women’s Football

The NWFL convened its 2023/24 Annual General Assembly under the theme ‘Women’s Football Rising’ on Thursday, October 5th, at the BON Hotel in Ikeja.

The event drew the participation of stakeholders, partners, women’s football club owners, and the press. On the same day, the 2023/24 NWFL premiership draw and league fixtures were unveiled, including the kickoff date.

In her opening address, Nkechi Obi, Chairperson of the NWFL, articulated the vision for the league: “To rejuvenate female football and the leagues, we are committed to strategic thinking that ensures full commercialization.

Our aim is to develop frameworks that increase grassroots football participation and provide a clear, guaranteed pathway for young talented girls to become professional football players. The board recognizes that professional games requiring commercialization are critical to women’s football’s growth.”

She emphasized the league’s role in nurturing talent, saying, “It’s evident in the number of national team players who started their careers in the NWFL and now play for foreign teams.” Obi highlighted key focus areas, including enhancing female participation and improving the league’s personnel, governance, revenue opportunities, and commercial value.

Obi revealed plans for sustainability, saying, “For the first time, NWFL will be promoting environmental and social sustainability in sports, making our league the first sustainable women’s league in Africa.” She expressed gratitude to stakeholders, clubs, and partners who share their vision and support their mission for monumental growth in professional women’s football in Nigeria.
