Nigeria international and former Arsenal midfielder Kelechi Nwakali faces an uncertain future at Barnsley FC after being dropped from the club’s first-team setup.
Head coach Conor Hourihane confirmed that the 26-year-old “will probably not feature again this season,” effectively sidelining the midfielder just months after his arrival at the League One outfit.

Nwakali joined Barnsley in the summer with hopes of reigniting his career in England, but he has struggled to make an impact, managing limited appearances and failing to cement a starting role. His recent exclusion hints at a potential breakdown in form or tactical fit under Hourihane’s leadership.
The decision now throws his long-term future into question, with a January exit increasingly likely. Nwakali’s career has been marked by frequent moves since leaving Arsenal, with stints in Spain, Portugal, and Belgium, but he has yet to find lasting stability.
Once heralded as one of Nigeria’s brightest prospects after captaining the Golden Eaglets to FIFA U-17 World Cup glory in 2015, Nwakali’s career trajectory has been one of unfulfilled potential.
With Barnsley chasing promotion to the Championship, the club appears ready to move on without him — leaving the midfielder searching once again for a fresh start to revive his once-promising career
