Esther Okoronkwo Vows ‘Nigeria Will Defend Our Crown’ As She Celebrates CAF Women’s Player Of The Year Nomination

Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has expressed her joy after being nominated for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year award, while confidently declaring that Nigeria will defend their WAFCON title in Morocco next year.

Okoronkwo, who was instrumental in Nigeria’s triumph earlier this year, described the nomination as both a personal milestone and a collective reward for the team’s success. “It’s an incredible honour,” she told reporters.

“Winning the WAFCON and then being recognised among the best in Africa means so much. But I’m even more motivated now — because we want to do it again.”

The AFC Toronto striker, who also provided key assists during Nigeria’s qualification run, credited teamwork and resilience as the driving forces behind the Super Falcons’ dominance. “We had to fight for everything last time — every goal, every point. That mentality won’t change. We’re going into the next tournament with the same hunger, the same unity, and a bigger dream,” she added.

Nigeria, 11-time African champions, will head to Morocco next year seeking to extend their record and secure another ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Okoronkwo emphasised that the team’s focus has already shifted from celebration to preparation. “We’ve celebrated enough — now it’s time to refocus,” she said. “Every team wants to beat Nigeria, but we’re not giving up our crown easily.”

She also thanked the fans for their unwavering support during the WAFCON campaign and CAF nominations. “The love from Nigerians everywhere keeps us going. Whether we play in Africa, Europe, or North America, we always feel it,” she said with a smile.

Okoronkwo’s inclusion among Africa’s elite marks another high point in her fast-rising career, as she aims to add continental glory to her growing list of personal achievements.
