NSSF to Host Maiden Veterans and Wounded Soldiers National Shooting Tournament in Honour of Defence Minister

The President of the Nigeria Shooting Sport Federation (NSSF), Commodore Mohammed Sagir Shettima, has announced plans to host the maiden National Shooting Sport Tournament for Veterans and Wounded Soldiers as part of efforts to promote inclusion and welfare within the military community.

Commodore Shettima made the disclosure during a courtesy visit by members of the NSSF Board to Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, at the Federal Ministry of Defence, Abuja.

The delegation congratulated the Minister on his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and outlined areas for strategic collaboration.

According to the NSSF President, the Federation aims to strengthen welfare initiatives for retired, wounded, and injured military personnel while leveraging their expertise to develop shooting sports nationwide.

He emphasized that the NSSF, as the only arms-bearing sports federation under the National Sports Commission, seeks institutional partnerships to curb arms proliferation and expand grassroots participation.

A key highlight of the proposal is the staging of a championship titled the “General C.G. Musa National Para-Shooting Trophy Championship.”

The event, to be held in honour of the Defence Minister, is designed to recognize the sacrifices and service of veterans and wounded soldiers while promoting camaraderie and rehabilitation through sport.

Commodore Shettima also appealed for the Ministry’s support in accessing a $20,000 equipment grant, upgrading shooting facilities such as the Jaji Shooting Range and the MKO Abiola National Stadium range in Abuja, and ensuring greater inclusion of injured servicemen and women in the Invictus Games and the 3rd National Para Games scheduled for March 2026 in Abuja.

In response, Minister Musa commended the initiative, describing it as a fitting tribute to military personnel. He assured the Federation of his support and pledged to facilitate necessary approvals to ensure the tournament’s successful hosting.
