The sixth slot was confirmed last weekend, when Nigeria’s men’s 4x400m quartet of Samson Nathaniel, Emmanuel Ojeli, Victor Sampson Ime and Sikiru Adeyemi booked qualification at Lefika International Relays which also held in Gaborone.

The mixed 4x100m team of Maria Omokwe, Chidera Ezeakor, James Emmanuel and Jennifer Obi Chukwuka also qualified in Gaborone, while the women’s 4x400m quartet got qualification during the MTN Champs Relays in Calabar.

In response to the achievements, Olopade declared that they all represent a major milestone for Nigerian athletics and reflects the NSC’s strategic goals in the general area of sports development as well as collaboration with the AFN.

“This is a big moment for Nigerian athletics. The qualification of all our relay teams for the World Relays Championships clearly reflects well on the National Sports Commission’s investment in the Athletics Federation of Nigeria.

Olopade said, “It shows that our collaboration with sports federations is working and delivering real results. I want to appreciate the AFN and our athletes for their commitment. This gives us great confidence for the future of Nigerian athletics.

“It is particularly exciting to see some of the young athletes we have been nurturing stepping up and playing key roles alongside our established stars. We are already focused on preparations for the championships in Gaborone this May.”
